It's a New Day

Hi, all. If you know my wife, you know how frequently she uses the word "intention," suggesting and instructing others to "set an intention." Well, for good reason. Things can really shift when you do this.

For me, in 2025, I've set an intention to relate differently to a writer's obligation to publicize, engage, and promote. This spring I attended two conferences, heard many panels and presentations, read copiously, and networked galore. And the immovable object—my resistance—has been moved.

It's no coincidence that out of the woodwork emerged a friend and graphic designer looking to grow her experience and expand her knowledge of the publishing sector. Two conversations later, we have phases laid out to achieve what I want to achieve as an author in this cultural, economic, media, and political climate that is so vastly different from the one in which I made my launch with HamishHamilton in 2009.

I'm equipped with new tools, including this really snazzy new site builder from BookBub. The tiny publishing imprint brand I launched in 2018, Aqua Fox Press, is no more. And the brand I launched in 2019, Aspiring Writer Syndrome, while quirky and humorous, was not a super attractive way to market myself. So it too has been retired. No regrets. All eyes forward!

A few different things brought out this intentional shift. One, my son is turning 3 years old this year, and his skyrocketing development just generally has me wanting to do better in every way. Notions of legacy loom, too, as the years race by. Also, I need to practice what I preach when it comes to authors I'm publishing through Synthetic Prophetic, the literary press I founded in 2024.

Thanks for stopping by. Check back soon for more content about the writing workshops I continue to lead through Gotham Writers Workshop, and other outlets; for freebies and giveways, and down the line, new books!
